A digital fan ecosystem built around access not speculation. Every pass is a key. Every key opens a room. Every room is yours.
Not collectibles. Access keys.
Three tiers.
Three levels of access.
Each tier unlocks a deeper layer of the PlayPass ecosystem. The pass you hold defines what the door opens to.
PASS
Entry into the ecosystem. Community, gated content, early access. The foundation.
PASS
Limited edition sport-specific cards. Exclusive video, fan challenges, priority drops.
PASS
The apex. Vault access, governance, simulated competition entry, first access to everything.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
A practice-based research project exploring sports NFTs as participatory media artefacts built around access, not price.
WHAT IS PLAYPASS?
PlayPass is a digital ecosystem where the NFT is the access key not the asset. Every pass unlocks a room. Every room is built around fan participation.
PlayPass is a practice-based research project from UCL BA Media Studies that tests a single idea: that sports-related NFTs can function as genuine media artefacts when they are designed around access, participation and cultural value rather than secondary-market speculation.
The project takes the question that almost every existing sports NFT project answers in the same way "what is this token worth?" and replaces it with a different one: "what does this token unlock?"
The collection is structured as a tiered access system. Each pass is a key. Each tier opens a deeper layer of the ecosystem content, community, governance, experience. Holders accumulate participatory value by holding the pass, not by trading it.
THE THREE PRINCIPLES
OVER ASSETS
OVER SPECULATION
OVER COMMODITY
THE RESEARCH APPROACH
PlayPass uses a practice-based research methodology. Rather than producing a written critique of the existing sports NFT landscape, the project builds an alternative model and treats the artefact itself as evidence. The collection, the website and the access system are all part of the research output.
The work draws on participatory culture theory, platform studies and digital ownership scholarship. It engages with case studies including NBA Top Shot, Sorare and the Australian Open NFT collection, analysing what each platform demonstrates about the gap between participation and speculation in sports NFTs.
The dissertation argues that NFTs in sports contexts can function as genuine media artefacts when participation is the design priority, not the byproduct.
PlayPass is the proof.
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
From initial concept to deployed artefact, a transparent record of how PlayPass was built and the decisions behind each phase.
The starting question was simple: why do sports NFTs almost always end up being about money? Existing platformS: NBA Top Shot, Sorare, the Australian Open Art Ball collection all introduced participation mechanics, but speculation remained the dominant value driver.
The PlayPass concept came out of identifying this gap. The aim was to design a tiered NFT collection where every utility lived with the holder and where the secondary market was structurally deprioritised. A pass not a card. A key not a coin.
Three core NFT types were developed: the Courtside Pass (Base Tier — the access key), the Limited Athlete Pass (Limited Tier — sport-specific footballers and runners) and the Exclusive Athlete Pass (Exclusive Tier — full ecosystem access).
The pixel art aesthetic was a deliberate choice. It remediates analogue sports trading cards and arcade culture, giving the tokens a visual logic that doesn't depend on blockchain literacy. Each tier was iterated through multiple drafts before final selection consistency of pixel resolution, palette and tone was the priority.
Polygon was selected as the deployment chain over Ethereum mainnet. The reasoning was twofold: gas fees on Polygon are negligible, removing a major barrier to participation and the environmental footprint is significantly lower which aligned with the project's accessibility-first ethos.
OpenSea was chosen as the listing marketplace because of its user familiarity. Pinata (IPFS) was selected for metadata storage to ensure decentralisation and permanence the holder's perks remain accessible regardless of platform changes.
The biggest challenge was onboarding friction. Most fans interested in PlayPass do not have wallets. Designing the wallet setup guide and minting walkthrough and making them feel approachable rather than intimidating became a project in itself.
Metadata structuring was the second major challenge: ensuring tier attributes, sport types and supply numbers all rendered correctly on OpenSea while keeping the IPFS hash chain clean. Several iterations were needed before the metadata schema worked end to end.
The website became the access layer for everything. Holders connect their wallet, the system verifies tier ownership and the corresponding access page unlocks. The verification flow was designed to feel like entering a digital environment not just clicking a link.
The four "rooms" of the ecosystem: the Clubhouse, Fan Nights, Creators Corner and the broader cultural layer were developed alongside the visual identity. The pixel art scenes are not decorative; they are the rooms themselves, presented as accessible spaces tied to the pass.
The final phase: deploying the collection on OpenSea, setting up the holder community channel and bringing the website online as the public-facing entry point. PlayPass is now live as a research artefact and as a functional access system.
The dissertation accompanies the artefact, providing the critical written component of the project. Together, they make the central argument: that NFTs can function as genuine media artefacts when participation is the design principle.
THE COLLECTION
Three tiers. Three levels of access. Each token is a key into a different layer of the ecosystem.
The PlayPass collection is built around tiered access. Each tier has its own visual identity, its own utility set and its own depth of participation. The progression is deliberate you are not buying scarcity, you are unlocking layers.

ROADMAP & WHITEPAPER
The project vision, the staged build and the principles guiding every decision.
ROADMAP
WHITEPAPER
▸ PROJECT VISION
PlayPass exists to demonstrate that sports NFTs can function as participatory cultural artefacts when access not speculation is the design priority. The project is built around the conviction that digital ownership should mean something to the holder, not just to the market.
The vision is a sports fan ecosystem where the token is the entry point, the tier defines the depth of access and the ongoing relationship between the holder and the project is structured around participation, not transaction.
▸ KEY IDEAS
PlayPass is built on three foundational ideas each one drawn directly from the theoretical framework underpinning the research and each one operationalised through the design of the collection itself.
NFTS
CULTURE
ENGAGEMENT
▸ TECHNICAL FOUNDATION
PlayPass is deployed on the Polygon network a decision driven by accessibility (low gas fees) and environmental responsibility (lower carbon footprint than Ethereum mainnet). Metadata is stored via Pinata on IPFS, ensuring decentralised, permanent access to token attributes regardless of platform changes.
The collection is listed on OpenSea, providing standard marketplace verification and discoverability. Holder access is gated through wallet verification, the website connects to MetaMask, reads the holder's tier and unlocks the corresponding access page.
This whitepaper is intentionally concise, as PlayPass is presented as a prototype design within a practice-based research context. A fully developed technical and commercial whitepaper would extend beyond the scope of this project, which instead focuses on exploring NFTs as participatory media artefacts.
HOW MINTING WORKS
A step-by-step walkthrough built for newcomers. Get from zero to holding your pass in five steps.
PLAYPASS IS LIVE ON OPENSEA
The full PlayPass collection is publicly available and verifiable on OpenSea. You can browse, mint and view all three tiers directly through the marketplace.
VIEW ON OPENSEA ▸CREATE A WALLET
Set up a MetaMask wallet. This is your digital ID it stores your pass and verifies ownership when you connect to the PlayPass site. If you're new to wallets, see the Wallet Setup Guide for a beginner-friendly walkthrough.
CONNECT YOUR WALLET
On OpenSea, click "Connect Wallet" in the top right and select MetaMask. Approve the connection request. Make sure you're on the Polygon network switch chains in MetaMask if needed.
SELECT YOUR NFT
Browse the PlayPass collection on OpenSea. Choose your tier: Base (Courtside Pass), Limited (Athlete Card), or Exclusive (VIP Vault Pass). Each tier unlocks a different layer of the ecosystem.
MINT ON THE MARKETPLACE
Click "Buy now" or "Mint" on your chosen pass. MetaMask will pop up to confirm the transaction. Approve the gas fee, Polygon fees are minimal, usually a few cents. Wait for confirmation.
ACCESS YOUR CONTENT
Return to the PlayPass website and head to the Member Access page. Click "Verify Ownership" on your tier. The site reads your wallet, confirms your pass and unlocks the access page tied to your tier. The token is the key no separate login needed.
The mint is not the end of the journey. It's the entry point. Everything PlayPass offers begins the moment you hold the pass.
WALLET SETUP GUIDE
If you've never used a crypto wallet, start here. A clean, beginner-friendly walkthrough for setting up MetaMask.
A wallet is just a digital ID. It stores your NFTs, signs transactions and proves ownership when you connect to PlayPass. You hold it. Nobody else can.
SETUP STEPS
UNDERSTAND WHAT A WALLET IS
A crypto wallet is a piece of software that stores your digital assets NFTs, tokens, ID. It's like a combination of a key, a signature and a vault. Nothing in the wallet leaves your control unless you approve it.
INSTALL METAMASK
Go to metamask.io and download the browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Edge) or install the mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. Always download from the official site to avoid scams.
CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT
Open MetaMask and click "Create a new wallet." Set a strong password. MetaMask will then show you a 12-word secret recovery phrase write this down on paper and store it somewhere safe and offline. Never share it. Never store it digitally.
ADD THE POLYGON NETWORK
In MetaMask, click the network dropdown at the top and select "Add Network." Enter Polygon's network details (or use the auto-add feature). PlayPass operates on Polygon make sure you're connected to it before minting.
FUND YOUR WALLET
To pay gas fees, you need a small amount of MATIC (Polygon's native token). You can buy MATIC directly through MetaMask, or transfer from an exchange. Even a few dollars covers many transactions on Polygon.
CONNECT TO A SITE
When PlayPass or OpenSea asks you to "Connect Wallet," click the prompt and select MetaMask. Approve the connection request. The site can now see your wallet address but cannot move anything without your explicit signature.
▸ STAY SAFE
Never share your recovery phrase. No legitimate site, support team, or PlayPass team member will ever ask for it. Anyone who asks is trying to steal your wallet.
Always verify the URL. Phishing sites often clone real ones. Bookmark official sites and use the bookmarks rather than clicking unfamiliar links.
Approve only what you understand. Read every transaction prompt before signing. If something looks wrong, cancel.

▸ ORIGIN — THE IDEA
PlayPass started from a question: why do sports NFTs almost always end up being about money? The research behind this project asks what happens when you design an NFT to do the opposite to prioritise access, participation and community over resale value. The pixel art aesthetic was a deliberate choice: it signals collectibility and nostalgia, but the real design challenge was making the token mean something to hold.
▸ THE DESIGN PROCESS
Three core NFT types were developed, the Courtside Pass (you're holding this one), the Athlete Card and the VIP Vault Pass. Each was generated using AI image tools and refined iteratively. The tier system demonstrates participatory culture in practice: ownership comes with meaningful engagement, not just scarcity.
▸ TECHNICAL DECISIONS
PlayPass is minted on Polygon chosen for low gas fees and reduced environmental footprint. Metadata is stored via Pinata on IPFS, ensuring decentralisation. The smart contract logic is transparent and holder-first: no hidden fees, no artificial scarcity beyond the collection size.
